Frequently asked questions

What are emission rights and how do they work?
Renewable Energy Units (HBEs) fall under the European RED-II directive and are closely linked to emission rights. While emission allowances primarily focus on limiting and trading CO2-emissions, HBEs promote the use of renewable energy in the transport sector. Companies that supply renewable energy to vehicles earn HBEs, while polluting companies are required to purchase them to meet their legal obligations. Both systems contribute to sustainability: emission allowances by reducing emissions and HBEs by rewarding the use of renewable energy.
How much can be earned with emission rights?
Revenues depend on energy consumption. With a charging volume for vehicles of more than 40 MWh (40,000 kWh) per year, up to €50 per MWh (€0.05 per kWh) net can be earned when charging from the grid. Charging sessions that can be linked to simultaneous on-site generation, e.g. from solar panels, can yield up to €100 per MWh.

The value of emission rights (HBE credits) is determined on the open market and depends on supply and demand. Prices may therefore vary and are not guaranteed, but historically the price has typically been between €10 and €15 per HBE. An HBE price of €10 translates to approximately €50 per MWh in earnings, after costs.

Why do earnings range from approximately €50 to €100 per MWh?
The earnings per charged megawatt-hour (MWh) typically ranges between €50 and €100, depending on market conditions and the source of the electricity.

Charging from the grid generally yields up to €50 per MWh. However, when it can be demonstrated that charging occurred simultaneously with self-generated renewable energy, e.g. from solar panels, earnings can reach up to €100 per MWh. This requires a verifiable, time-synchronized administration proving that the electricity was generated and consumed within the same hour. Voltico’s software is fully equipped to support this verification automatically.

Is participation complicated or time-consuming?
No, Voltico offers a fully automated and compliant solution. The process is simple, with no operational changes or technical integrations required. We perform a one-time, over-the-air update for your chargers and take care of all administration, trading, and reporting.over-the-air update uit voor de laadpalen en verzorgen alle administratie, verhandelingen en rapportages.
Which companies are eligible?
Companies with their own charging stations* that provide electricity to vehicles, such as logistics companies, real estate locations, offices and fleet owners, are eligible. With at least 10 charging stations, it is usually profitable.

* The electricity connection to the charging stations must be in the name of the (parent) company.
Which companies buy emission rights?
In the Netherlands, fossil fuel suppliers are legally obliged to purchase a prescribed number of emission rights annually, such as Renewable Fuel Units (HBEs in Dutch). In doing so, they contribute to the financing of sustainable energy projects in the transport sector. This system is part of European regulations and laid down in national laws and regulations.

Through Voltico, your company can easily offer HBEs on the market. Normally, this can be difficult due to complex administration, regulations, lack of experience and small trading volumes.
What requirements does my company have to meet?
- The grid connection must be registered in the name of the company. In the case of building leases, this means that the energy contract must be in the name of your company.
- Only 100% subsidiaries can be included in the registration by the parent company. Subsidiaries are not allowed to register on behalf of their parent company.
- Due to audit costs, participation becomes profitable from 40 MWh (40,000 kWh) per year. For electric cars, the annual charging volume is approximately 3 to 5 MWh per charging station. For electric vans, it is around 10 MWh, and for trucks, 100 MWh. We are happy to help you determine if your charging volume is sufficient.

How do HBEs contribute to a better environment?
HBEs encourage the use of renewable energy for transport. This reduces CO2-emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. The emission rights system rewards companies that embrace sustainability, which contributes to a lower environmental impact and a more sustainable future for transportation.
What does Voltico cost?
Voltico operates on a no-cure, no-pay basis: we only charge a fee when generated HBE credits are actually sold. Our fee consists of a pre-agreed percentage of the realized revenue. One-time setup costs are deducted from the first payout.

This means no upfront investment is required, making participation accessible to any organization with sufficient charging infrastructure.
What does it cost to get started?
There are no upfront costs, as setup expenses are deducted from future earnings.
